FUTURESAVER OF SEPTEMBER 2010


David Keith is a physicist and environmental activist who is a TIME 2009 Hero of the Environment. He contributes to climate change research. He is a professor at the University of Calgary, Canada. He is very bright. He uses planet-sized ideas to solve planet-sized problems. He wants to cool the Earth by sucking billions of tons of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and by shielding the Earth's surface from trillions of watts of sunshine. He probes what tools can do and how they can be used effectively and economically. Climate work is now his passion. Bill Gates relies on meetings organized by Keith to stay up- to-date on climate change. Keith knows that you have to understand tools to be able to use them properly. Professor Keith has worked near the interface between climate change, science, energy, technology and public policy for 20 years. His work in technology and policy assessment has centered on the capture and storage of CO2, the technology and implications of global climate engineering, the economics and climatic impacts of large-scale wind power and the prospects for hydrogen fuel. He built a high-accuracy infrared spectrometor for NASA and increased the safety of stored CO2.
