Betty McCollum is the splendid Congresswoman from Minnesota 4 who eloquently expressed disapproval of Bush escalation of the Iraq war. She knows the futility of a fifth year of endless killing created by brutal occupation and civil war strife. She knows that the proper action of the USA in Iraq is to hand all military and civilian functions over to the Iraqis so they can decide the details of their civilian and military government actions so that all the people of Iraq have a say in how the nation and its resources and territories are to be fairly and rationally divided so that no group is ignored or diminished. The USA and other outside forces can then be simultaneously withdrawn, ending the insult and disaster of occupation. The entire human community can help the Iraqis rebuild their shattered nation but only in fulfillment of requests from Iraqis. They need to compile their requirements and the rest of us need to help but it is they and they alone who should decide what they need and when they need it. The age of empire is over.
