Gayle Brandeis crafts all of the CODEPINK Alerts that go to nearly 200,000 members weekly. She has written several books including The Book of Dead Birds: A Novel which won Barbara Kingsolver's Bellweather Prize for Fiction in Support of a Literature of Social Change and she wrote the novel Self Storage. Her poetry, fiction and essays have appeared widely and have received several awards including "A Writer Who Makes a Difference". She has taught at universities, libraries, community centers and writing conferences. Her essay on the meaning of liberty was included in the Statue of Liberty's Centenial time capsule in 1986. She has a BA in "Poetry and Movement Arts of Expression, Meditation and Healing" and an MFA in Creative Writing/Fiction and has taught at universities, libraries, community centers and writing conferences. Gayle also wrote Fruitflesh: Seeds of Inspiration for Women Who Write. She read at Mixed Roots Film & Literary Festival June 13, 09 at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles having been invited by Heidi Durrow, a fellow Bellweather Prize winner. Gayle supports the Afghan Women's Writing Project which is an online school to give Afghan women a way to get their stories out into the world.
