Alice Waters is executive chef, author and proprietor of Chez Panisse, a restaurant and cafe. She believes cooking should be based on the finest and fresshest seasonal ingredients produced sustainably and locally. She advocates that the food economy be good, clean and fair. She has helped create a community of scores of local farmers/ranchers dedicated to sustainable agriculture. She led to the creation of The Edible Schoolyard in Berkeley Ca: a one acre garden plus kitchen-classroom with an "eco-gastronomic" curriculum. One thousand students were involved in all aspects of the food cycle. Waters established Chez Panisse Foundation to support the Schoolyard and teach, nurture and empower young people. She was inducted into the California Hall of Fame; with Kofi Annan she received the 2008 Global Environmental Citizen Award; is a Member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences; received lifetime Achievement Award of Restaurant magazine's World's 50 best Restaurants; founded Sustainable Food Program at the American Academy in Rome; Force for Nature Award, NRDC; Best American Restaurant, Gourmet magazine, Vice President Slow Food Int.; Founder, Yale Sustainable Food Project, Berkeley College, Yale University, New Haven Connecticut.
