FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 11-21-2009

Martti Ahtisaari is the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize laureate who is a former President of Finland and a United Nations diplomat/mediator. His international peace work was excellent in Kosovo, Namibia, Indonesia, Iraq and elsewhere. He speaks five languages and has won ten major awards. For more than three decades he has worked to end conflicts around the world. He urged President Obama to act on the Mideast to end the conflicts there by giving the Mideast high priority during his first year in office and he said that the European Union, Russia and the United Nations must also be committed so that the crises from Israel and Palestine to Iraq and Iran can be ended. Martti used his organization Crisis Management Initiative to create a peace deal in which the Free Aceh Movement in Indonesia gave up violent secessionism and accepted limited autonomy from Indonesia. He helped engineer Namibia's independence from South Africa. Many boys in Namibia are now named Martti. Martti said, "if we set our sights on the future and imagine what the world could look like if the countries in the region could jointly begin to develop their economic potential, build transport links, make full use of their educated population and begin to reap the benefits of an advantageous location in the crossroads of three continents." For working hard and smart to create peace for all of us, Martti Ahtisaari has been named Futuresaver of the Week. Click the links below for more information.
