Mariette DiChristina is the new Editor in Chief of Scientific American magazine, it's first female Editor in Chief in its 164 year-old history. Scientific American is the oldest continuously published magazine in the USA. She has also written numerous scientific articles. Scientific American appears in 20 foreign language editions and with more than 1.1 million copies in circulation worldwide. It is written by scientists and professional journalists. DiCristina teaches science writing in the graduate program at New York University and is president of the National Association of Science Writers. She has also done local newspaper coverage and has served as executive editor of Popular Science magazine. Nearly all of the scientific sources for Scientific American are scientists. She does not have a scientific background but is so kowledgeable in scientific basics that she understands the accomplishments created by scientists and knows great scientific work when she sees it and is a quick learner seeking knowledge. The bulk of the scientific features are writen by scientists or professional writers. DiChristina views the editor-reporter relationship as a collaberation and uses a gentle approach to editing to craft stories that emphasize the reporter's unique perspective to editing on a particular topic.
