This is actually quite complex in that almost every medic in the UK knows a little about BSE. They also know that MAFF has been misleading (in the interest of public calm) concerning various other food 'scares'. For instance when it reached the press that listeria was to be found in cood-chill food ('peril in your TV dinner; Today Newspaper 1989) MAFF instantly denied it but the press simply went and asked the Public Health Laboratory Service and found out that it may well be true. Similarly when the salmonella-eggs story got out through Mrs Curry, it was denied immediately by MAFF but there was plenty of evidence that it was true from elsewhere. BSE was to be different. The information had to come from MAFF and so denials could not be bypassed. The medical profession, however, was not so easily led up a garden path and various groups (also, see Public Health) argued with MAFF data. Not the Dept of Health and not many of the groups abroad, who only received this data.
The subject should have reached the medical profession as soon as it became known in 1986. In fact it took a young doctor in central London and a physiotherapist to write a short piece to the BMJ for the medical profession to learn what was happening.
There is now not much that MAFF, DoH or SEAC (each of which have worked extremely hard and should be credited) can say against Dealler's statistics; they are entirely based on standard methods and MAFF data. There is not much that they can say against Lacey's logic; he takes a Public Health viewpoint, which is generally a worst-case scenario, and putting human life first. There is not a lot they can say against Helen Grant or Gareth Roberts; they take a logical line with published data. It only seems that insults can be made to prevent the media picking up stories from the sources of a different camp. I would ask that anyone contacting one of these groups is wary of this
